Signs of the times: alert without panic, hope without a date.

A pastoral guide to the signs that announce the second coming of Christ. The point is not to guess the day, but to live ready for that day.

What are the signs of the times?

The signs of the times are signals the Bible gives so the church can recognize the nearness of Jesus' return. They are not a secret code for dating the end of the world, but indicators that call us to watchfulness, holiness and evangelism. Jesus himself taught them in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24-25).

"Watch therefore, and pray always, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass." — Luke 21:36

Six major biblical signs

These signs should not be read in isolation or used to alarm. Together they form a picture of a world moving toward its appointment with its Creator.

Wars and conflicts

Matthew 24:6-7 describes nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom. Wars are birth pains, not ends in themselves.

Natural disasters

Famines, earthquakes and pestilences appear as birth pains of a world groaning under the curse and waiting for redemption (Romans 8:22).

Apostasy and deception

Paul warns in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 that a falling away will come before the day of the Lord. False prophets and seductive doctrines will be common.

Global preaching of the gospel

Matthew 24:14 promises that this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.

Persecution of believers

Jesus said we would be hated by all nations for his name's sake. Persecution is a sign of faithfulness, not defeat.

Increase of wickedness

The love of many will grow cold, Jesus said. Growing wickedness is a warning for the believer to keep his first love.

What the signs do not mean

  • They do not give a date. Matthew 24:36 forbids date-setting. The believer lives in continuous expectancy.
  • They are not an excuse for panic. Scripture calls for watchfulness, not anxiety.
  • They do not replace the mission. While we wait, we preach, serve and love.

How to live in the last days

  1. 1. Stay watchful. Jesus compared his coming to a thief: it arrives when not expected. Live each day as if it were the last.
  2. 2. Grow in holiness. The hope of his coming purifies. "Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself" (1 John 3:3).
  3. 3. Share the gospel. The best preparation for the end is bringing others to Christ. The globalized gospel is both a sign and a task.
  4. 4. Rest in hope. The believer does not fear the future because he knows the one who holds the future in his hands.

Frequently asked questions

Are we already in the last days?

Biblically, the church has lived in the last days since Pentecost (Acts 2:17). The question is not whether we are close, but whether we are ready.

Are current earthquakes a sign of the end?

Jesus mentioned them as part of the birth pains, not as a single event. Every natural disaster is a call to examine our lives before God.

What should I teach my family about this?

Teach hope, not fear. Christ wins, the believer is rescued and the future belongs to God. Children should grow up with confidence, not anxiety.
